Rooibos Tea – our in-house specialty
Our specialty tea is Rooibos, also known as bush tea or redbush tea. This variety originated in Southern Africa but has more recently become popular throughout the world. Rooibos is a herbal tea full of flavour. It is a caffeine-free alternative to black and green tea. The health benefits of Rooibos stem from its powerful antioxidants which can help protect cells from damage by free radicals.
The Silk Road meets Africa
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. Not only did this ancient route carry goods, such as silk, spices and tea, it also carried culture, skills and ideas from the East to the West. Cape Town was founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. It served as a refreshment post between China, India and Europe. The traders brought with them the culture of tea drinking. Early settlers in the Cape of Good Hope began to augment the expensive Chinese tea with leaves from the local Fynbos shrub. They discovered that the fine, needle-like leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant made a tasty, aromatic brew.
The leaves of the Rooibos were chopped with fine axes and bruised with mallets before being left in heaps to ferment. Once fermented, the Rooibos was spread out to dry in the hot African sun, ready for use as a thirst-quenching drink. Thus was borne the wonderful, aromatic Rooibos tea that we know today. Tea is not always tea?
Traditional tea bags are often made from the “dust and fannings” from broken tea leaves. This negatively affects the quality of essential oils, aroma and taste in the tea. Additionally, most tea bags constrain tea, preventing it from giving you the full flavour and aromas.
