Rooibos tea (pronounced ‘roy-boss’) originated in Southern Africa. It is made from the fermented leaves of the Aspalathus linearis flowering shrub. The rooibos plant originates from a relatively small area of the Western Cape of South Africa and has proven extremely difficult to grow outside of this area. The species is believed to be under threat from climate change with some scientists having predicted the demise of the species within the next century. The leaves turn a red colour after they are picked, bruised and fermented, giving Rooibos the alternate names “redbush tea” or “bush tea”.

Due to its sweet, delicate and earthy flavour, Rooibos has become popular throughout the world. With no caffeine and with sweet hints of vanilla, it is said to have a calming effect. Because it’s caffeine-free, this tea has become a firm favourite for many tea drinkers including pregnant ladies and children. There are no calories in Rooibos on it’s own, but you can add milk, honey or sugar to taste.
